Meet Jeff Dempsey

Jeff Dempsey is excited to pursue the Democratic nomination in the 175th Legislative District. In addition to featuring some of Philadelphia’s most historic neighborhoods, the district includes Independence Hall, where, almost 250 years ago, a group of patriots shook the world by declaring that governance requires the consent of the people.

In 2006 Jeff arrived in Fishtown to follow his dreams. He was retracing the journey of his grandparents, who settled in Fishtown in the early 20th century and raised a family there with roots extending across four generations to the present day. Jeff attended Temple University, where he rose to the presidency of the student body Senate, while supporting himself by working at a neighborhood insurance agency.

In 2010 Jeff took on the challenge of managing Kevin Boyle’s first campaign for state representative.  The race was against the Republican House Speaker Emeritus, who, despite being under criminal indictment, secured the unspoken support of local Democratic political machine leaders by doling out unaccountable “walking around money” to them. Undaunted, the Boyle campaign took its bold message directly to the voters, knocking on over 10,000 doors. In the end, the campaign was the only one in the entire state that year to defeat an incumbent Republican.

Jeff joined Representative Boyle’s first legislative team as deputy chief of staff.  Jeff successfully advocated for Representative Boyle to be a strong voice for progressive causes such as limiting the capacity of gun magazines, including adding the LGBTQ+ community to statutory protection from discrimination, and providing a path for undocumented children to continue their education and enhance their vital impact within our communities. Jeff also oversaw a constituent services operation that was ranked as the second-most prolific in Pennsylvania.

In 2015 Jeff became the Program Director for CeaseFirePA, Pennsylvania’s largest gun violence prevention organization.  Whether utilizing his legislative experience to help formulate strategy and messaging, or communicating directly with elected officials and concerned residents throughout the state to garner support for life-saving legislation, Jeff has been a tireless crusader for the CeaseFirePA mission. His dedication is reflected in last year’s enactment of protections for domestic violence victims from gun violence – the first major gun safety bill signed in decades in Pennsylvania.

Jeff believes that all progressive causes can benefit with better equipped advocates, particularly in a political climate plagued by the actions of President Trump. That is why he volunteers his time to conduct training sessions for organizations such as Fair Districts PA, Resist, Persisterhood, and others.

In 2018 Jeff married his life partner, Ritama, with whom he raises two energetic rescue dogs. His family and friends are ready to support his next step in a career of fighting for progressive values. Jeff Dempsey is running to ensure that the 175th Legislative District remains an area of opportunity for all.
